About Us

The farm vehicles are the genuine models from our stop-motion animated Series: Little Red Tractor (BBC). They were designed and built by our great team of the time and genuinely cherished.
The Little Music Company

The story so far

To list 30 years worth of credits here would be dull to say the least. When the studio was set up in 1988 there was Michael Cross and myself, a decent sound desk, some reel to reel tape machines and we were packed into a room the size of an average Lounge.

We recorded radio advertisements, the occasional band and created sound for a few corporate videos. Then in 1990 something strange and unexpected happened – we won a contract to create Music and Effects tracks for 65 episodes of a globally famous American animated Series called Casper The Friendly Ghost for HIT Entertainment. The good news was that, for the first time, the studio was in the black but with the loot came a vertical learning curve that introduced us to digital technology, multi-national TV formats and TV Execs who brought a level of time and quality pressure we had never before witnessed.

We even made it onto the TV news – which warranted a new jacket of course.

Thereafter we got a taste for Kid’s TV and a major commission from the BBC to cast, record and direct voices for 26 episodes of Albert The 5th Musketeer followed and before long we were regular attendees at Cannes, Animation Festivals and the wardrobe was accommodating two more jackets.

We moved to bigger and bigger buildings, more studios, more people and an overdraft equal to that of a small country – work expanded to include music composition, scripting and reversioning and before we knew it our 3rd building needed 4 floors, 16 car parking spaces, enough potted plants to support the Eden Project and jackets for everyone.

Fabulous shows followed including Watership Down, Magic Roundabout, Lazytown, Barney, Clifford The Big Red Dog, Paw Patrol and numerous others that were extraordinary for a small independent studio in Gloucestershire.

It seemed natural to move into production and so in 1994 we did so making a Series called Deep Sea Dick for Nickelodeon, then Billy and Merlin The Magical Puppy for ITV, Little Monsters and 75 episodes of Little Red actor for BBC culminating in the $ 20m epic The Roman Mysteries for BBC in 2006.

Well it couldn’t last of course – a man can only have so many jackets. Following the global crash of 2008 the studio needed to contract and adjust to the proliferation of new TV Channels, global markets and the sad collapse of UK originated Children’s programming.

In recent years we have continued to produce original content from Bottom Knocker Street (52 episodes for Citv) andThe Bopps (Nickelodeon) as well as an increasing number of Online productions.

In 2018 we celebrate 30 years in telly. Mike and I are still together albeit showing a few wrinkles and shelves full of Grecian 2000. We’re both parents now and a tad wiser. The new studios are friendly and relaxed and managed by Niki Felstead – an actor and musician who came to voice for us 4 years ago and never got around to leaving. There are seven parking spaces, one potted plant and enough memorabilia to fill a museum.

We continue to enjoy creating music and effects, directing and casting and the studio is as busy as it ever was – many of our actors have grown up with us and I have to say that if I could have seen where we would end up 30 years on I’d have spent less time worrying and enjoyed the ride more.

Script Writing

Do you have a concept, but no-one to write it? Let us take a look. We have in house writers who could develop your initial concept, create a writer’s bible and even take your idea through to scripting stage. We also have links with other experienced writers in the UK and overseas.

CASTING

We have built up a large network of experienced actors over the years, and so have an incredible range of voices. From the serious to the surreal, from the cute to the crazy, all you have to do is set the parameters for your “voice choice” and let us do the rest.

ADAPTATION

We can adapt the script for the target market! Changing the word “sidewalk” for “pavement” or “trunk” for “boot” may seem finicky but it is this kind of careful and sympathetic attention to detail which will give any text an English or American feel to it, as you require.

MUSIC

Do you need a theme tune? Or a jingle? Or incidental music for an entire series? Then let us create it for you. We have access to a team of experienced composers to cover every style of music, from animated high jinks to full and genuine orchestral pieces.

MIXING

The final audio mix on any project is crucial. Combining the individual audio elements on a project and producing a mix that balances those elements correctly and enhances the overall project is one of our fortes, we have produced mixes for studios in the UK, Europe and the USA.

DIRECTING

We have highly experienced in-house directors, who will guide the voice talent through your projects. So whilst having your own director work with the actors in our studios is of course an option, we can also offer this highly important service.
